Content Management Systems (CMS)
What is a CMS system?
Wikipedia gives us the following definition:A content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Content management systems are deployed primarily for interactive use by a potentially large number of contributors. http://en.wikipedia.org
Implementing a CMS system on your website or intranet will allow you to maintain your own internet presence and publish content according to your preferences or predefined rules. The system will manage your computer files, image media, audio files, electronic documents and web content. The idea is to make these files available in your office network as well as on the World Wide Web.
When is it relevant?
The majority of companies can benefit from a well planned and implemented CMS system; however it is very important to know why you should. Too often clients implement a CMS system as a short cut, either to save money in paying for updates or in the belief that they have the time to do so.When these two reasons are the only driving force behind implementing this technology it more often than not becomes what we call “shelf ware”. It is not adopted by the people meant to work with it and is retired to the shelf where it will spend the rest of its days. It is critical to know when to choose a maintenance package and when to choose a CMS system.
Sightings will consult with you and help you to make these decisions at the time when it is right for your company. We also make sure that when you do go ahead with your CMS system that you are aware of the benefits of the system you have chosen.
Sightings predominantly works with MODx an Open Source PHP Application Framework designed to support strict web standards.
MODx is 100% buzz word compliant, supporting AJAX, CSS, XHTML, and with predefined tools it allows you to build a range of Web 2.0 sites. Designed to handle multiple contributors, editors and administrators it is fully scalable for even the largest corporate companies.
MODx is also one of the few CMS that is truly search engine friendly partly because of the strong emphasis on web standards.
